Raqib Shaw - Space Between Dreams
During our visit we were lucky to be given a preview of one of his latest works. We felt the most fitting place to shoot the work was in the garden which, in part, is included in the painting itself.
This shorter form video of sections of the work were captured ahead of its first ever public display.
The videos produced for Raqib Shaw were made as part of ‘Project Love’ a collaboration between Graeme Dudderidge and myself. The films and text are reproduced here with kind permission
Raqib Shaw - The Artist’s Garden
In the once barren perimeter of his studio complex, located in a former sausage factory in Peckham, internationally renowned contemporary artist Raqib Shaw (White Cube/ Pace Gallery/Thaddeus Ropac) has created an improbable garden oasis that holds a direct dialogue with the fantastical enamelled painted worlds he creates.
As much an extension of the artist’s work the gardens have increasingly begun to appear as the subject of the paintings themselves, as art imitates life and returns in an endless cycle. On a blazing summer’s day amongst the heady drone of bees and the gurgling of streams we visited to document them in stills and video, ahead of his show “Space Between Dreams” at Pace Gallery New York, for which the painting featured as a sneak preview was created.

Susanne du Toit - Her approach to drawing
During the morning of the interview we spent some time filming Susanne working in her studio.
This fascinating video captures Susanne’s methodology and the reasons behind it. During the process of visiting the sitters at their homes, Susanne often had a limited time with them and had to work relatively quickly. Making the initial drawings in person, avoiding the photographic process, she was able to capture 2 or 3 drawings and later choose the drawing that had the most energy to take forward onto the canvas.
This video, along with the main studio interview was presented at Susanne’s Solo show at the London Library during ‘Lit Fest’ in April 2023

Susanne du Toit - On the subject of motherhood
We recorded the voice-over for this video sequence in Susanne’s home on the same day as filming the main studio interview. You might even to be able to hear some birdsong in the background from her garden.
This video was then created to illustrate Susanne’s collection of paintings on the subject of motherhood using a mixture of still images of the works and footage of the studio and some of the paintings in the environment of her studio.
This video was shared by Susanne in Instagram as a celebration of mothers on Mother’s Day 2023.
